“How nice that you’ve become friends,” Amalia said when she realized I was joining her daughter.

Emma grinned. “Margaret, do you remember Tessa?”

“Yes,” Margaret said. “Pleasure..to…see you again.”

“You too,” I said.

Over banana oatmeal buttermilk waffles, eggs benedict, cranberry bliss bars, yogurt and more, we chatted about how lovely the wedding and reception had been. Then Emma moved on to other matters.

“Tessa works on cold cases, Mum,” she said. “Chasing down murderers and kidnappers who think they’ve gotten away with their misdeeds.”

“Oh? I thought she did drug cases.”

I swallowed, my lie coming back to haunt me. “It’s cold cases,” I said.

“I swore you said drugs. We had that whole talk.”

“I transferred from drug crimes last year. I’m still getting used to being in cold cases.”

Amalia gave me an odd look.

“I’d had too much to drink,” I rambled on. “So if I said drugs, I guess I did. But I’m actually in cold cases.”

“She says it’s difficult. It’s not like it is in movies and books. They’re always short-staffed and have too many crimes jockeying for attention.”

A tight smile from Amalia. “Yes.”

“What are your favorite kinds of cases?” Emma asked.

I bit off a chunk of cranberry bliss. “There are several kinds. Ideally, the police would’ve investigated the case correctly the first time around. The record is intact and thorough. There’s been new technology that can make a difference. Another favorite kind of case is when I can get out in the field. Too much of my time is spent at desks, reading old papers, looking at photos, making calls, et cetera.”

Amalia shivered. “It’s too early in the morning to talk about crime.”

“Oh, Mum,” Emma said. “We’re hardly doing that.”

“Hey,” I said. “Let’s talk about—”

“If you were going to kill someone and get away with it, how would you do it?” Emma asked her mother.

Across the table, Amalia stiffened, and her gaze turned ferocious.

“Emma Elizabeth Antoinette Louise,” Amalia said in a hiss, “these awful men killed your aunt in cold blood and nearly killed your sister. Stop it! See how you’re upsetting Margaret.”

Margaret blinked. “I’m fine.”

“Mum!” Emma’s mouth gaped open. “I didn’t mean it like…I didn’t mean…” She blinked away tears.

“Oh, darling,” Amalia said with a sigh. “I’m feeling rather sensitive today. Fine. Okay, fine, Emma, if you insist on this topic.” A sigh. “How would you do it, Tessa?”

“Uh, I’d probably make it look like an accident.”

“An accident!” Emma said. “That’s genius. No one would even know it was a murder.”

“Goodness!” Amalia chimed in. “Now can we move on to other matters? Margaret, do you fancy a drive out in the country today?”

The middle sister shrugged and pushed her eggs around on her plate.

“Eat your food,” Amalia told her.

“Mum! I am…not…a child.”

“Of course you’re not. I’m sorry.”
